When, having drunk from the gash of sunset, It is thus soothing to be transported back to a simpler time – even if briefly. Now, my worries seem to be what bill I have to pay the next day, whether I would finish my PhD in time, what opportunity did I miss or thought I missed and the list goes on. I think my sister was also very tensed about how crisply ironed her school uniform was, but she was the only nutcase. Another HUGE tension used to be the stringent requirement that all notebooks which did not bear the school crest needed to be covered in brown paper and plastic sheets with a label stuck on the front with our name and class/section. We used to get tensed by the Math test the next day, that Chemistry teacher who seemed to hate us, that report card we forgot to get ma to sign or that speech we were supposed to give in the school assembly the next day.

I have no idea if all of them were parental guidance approved – but hey – no one cared! Of course, during a particular season which I now forget – primetime tv hour was interspersed by pesticide commercials for cotton farmers (I still remember the “Ciba Geigy ki Polytrin C” which I think killed the “Amreekan sundi” and “Chitkabri sundi”) Of course, me and my sister made full use of the mention of insects and caterpillars during dinner hour to gross others out! We used to get excited by the goodies ma baba would pick up after their evening prayer+stroll everyday. All I can remember thinking at that time was whether it was 8 pm or not – the ‘ptv drama serial’ time. What ended up happening was everyone jammed into the kitchen instead of the dining room eating on the counter top as mom made fresh roti (of course this only happened in winter – summer was the time most people in Pakistan resorted to outside Tandoor walas to get the fresh bread). I remember dad hurrying mom up since they had to leave for Isha prayers and she insisted that they should eat first. Even though it probably wasn’t that different. Life as it was back then, seems so simple to me now. (btw, the first line ‘Voh Baatein teri Voh fasaney tere – Shagufta Shagufta Bahane tere’ means ‘O the tales you (used to) tell, those blooming (original?) excuses you (used to) make’). The former was used to joke around a LOT by many and still is! One song I found however, which totally took me back today was theĪnd I remember my mother jokingly humming the first line for dad – who really was making some genuine/bogus excuse at dinner. For most Pakistani children who grew up in the 90s, Syed’s voice along with that of her mother singing “Haye meri angoothian” and then “Lo phir basant ayi” on either PTV or NTM should ring some bells. So of course, I googled her to listen to some old songs. Apart from the 70s carpeted-bathroom feature, extensive woodwork and of course the pitbull which finally did die – the singer Tahira Syed was mentioned who was supposedly a neighbor (I don’t remember this too well). Today, we were chatting about my grandmother’s house back in Lahore and how it never changed over years. You may also read the book Kulyat E Habib Jalib, Deewan Zafar Ali Khan, and Bang e Dohul.Even decades later, hearing the same old voice, same old melody can really transform me into another time and another place.
